What is the Probability of Passing the ECE Board Exam Without Reviewing?

I already discussed with you the advantages and disadvantages of using Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) in PRC ECE/Electronics Engineer Board exam in my previous post. One disadvantage of MCQ is examiner have a chance to get a correct answer by guessing and if they are familiar (due to practice) with the types of examination, it became very easy.

Given with disadvantages of using MCQ, ECE/Electronics board exam questions was design to counter this weaknesses. Below are the types of sample multiples choice questions that are helpful for your review and we will review and analyze the answer choices.


ECE/Electronics Board Exam Sample Review Questions and Analysis

1. Solving Problem

Question: An electronic device draws 300 watts from it's 24 volt power source. Find the effective resistance

a. 1.92 ohms
b. 19.20 ohms
c. 1.25 ohms
d. 12.50 ohms

Review and Analysis: As you notice on the choices of answers, they are design to counter examiners guessing. Number digits are the same for a and b and c and d and differ only with decimal points. For examiner without knowledge of power and current, it is hard to guess the correct answer. If you know ohms law, it will be an easy question.

2. Charts and Graphs

Question: In order to have the best efficiency and stability, where on the loadline should a solid state power amplifier be operated?

a. Just below the saturation point
b. At 1.414 times the saturation point
c. Just above the saturation point
d. At the saturation point

Review and Analysis: Can you guess the answer for this type of question? With this type of question design, examiners will have a hard time guessing. To get the correct answer you should have knowledge on power amplifier Loadline graphical analysis. So, better review those charts and graphs.

3. Poetic with Rhyme

Question: The source of mechanical power to turn the rotors of alternators, large and small, A.C. and D.C.

a. prime contractor
b. primer
c. prime mover
d. prime user

Review and Analysis: The question is very poetic, it is arranged and give you choices for answers that starts with "Prime" and ends with "R".

4. Fill in the Blanks, True or False and Definition

Question 1: ______ is a single bit comparator.

a. Wired OR
b. Exclusive OR
c. NOR Gate
d. Exclusive NOR

Question 2: In semiconductor application, which of the following statement is NOT TRUE?

a. An ohmmeter test across the base-collector terminal of a transistor should show low resistance in one polarity and high resistance on the opposite polarity.
b. A TRIAC is bidirectional device.
c. An ohmmeter test across a diode shows low resistance in one polarity and high resistance in the opposite polarity.
d. An ohmmeter test across the base collector of a transistor should show low resistance for both polarities

Question 3: What is Residual Magnetism?

a. The external magnetic field  when the current is flowing through the exciting coil
b. The flux density, which exist in the iron core when the magnetic field intensity is reduced to zero
c. The flux density, which exist in the iron core when the magnetic field intensity is at it's maximum value

Review and Analysis: Even though it is a multiple choice questions, fill in the blanks, true or false and definition type of exam are integrated so, be better prepared for it.

5. Laws and Theory

Question: What law in Electronics where an induced current will be in such a direction that it's own magnetic field will oppose the magnetic field that produced the same?

a. Electromagnetic Law
b. Norton's Law
c. Lenz law
d. Maxwell law

Review and Analysis: There are many laws and theories in Electronics, unfamiliarity with them results in choosing the wrong answer or end in guessing.

6. Parts of a Circuit

Question: Which of the following is not an essential part of an oscillator?

a. Source of energy that supply the losses in a tank circuit
b. A resistor IC combination circuit
c. Resonant circuit consist of Inductance and Capacitance
d. Regenerative feedback circuit

Review and Analysis: If you are not familiar with oscillator, I think you will have a hard time guessing this type of question.

7. Latest Technology

Question: A detailed step by step set of direction telling a computer exactly how to proceed to solve a specific problem or specific task.

a. Sequence
b. Flow chart
c. Computer program
d. Process

Review and Analysis: The choices are somehow related to each other but what is the best answer? If you are ECE graduate, surely you know about computers and how they work.

I hope right now you understand why ECE or Electronics Engineer Board exam is difficult despite the weaknesses of a multiple choice questions. With carefully chosen question covering all syllabus of Electronics and proper design to counter guessing (100 questions with 4 choices), the probability of passing without knowledge is very small. In addition, a passing percentage of 70% without getting 50% below for any subjects eliminates your luck in guessing.

So, review those formulas, study graphs and charts, understand laws and principles, memorize definitions and analyze those electronic circuits.
