Ubuntu OS Smartphone - First on Galaxy Nexus

Will Ubuntu Mobile Capture the Hearts of Filipino People?

Ubuntu is a free operating system with 20 millions users in desktops and laptops worldwide. After PC and TV, Ubuntu goes on mobile. Will it wipe out Android and Windows Phone in the market?

Ubuntu on smartphone is designed to make all your phone content easier to access and apps more immersive. What caught my attention with Ubuntu OS is the capability to use the 4 edges of the screen with your swiping gestures letting you move faster between apps, settings and content.

Galaxy Nexus - First Ubuntu Smartphone

Galaxy Nexus handset was chosen by Canonical for demoing the Ubuntu OS. Galaxy Nexus is a Multi-Touchscreen Android phone developed in partnership between Google and Samsung.

It is the first device to run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS and will be the first one to run Ubuntu OS. It is powered by 1.2 GHz dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 CPU, 307 MHz PowerVR SGX540 GPU and 1 GB RAM.

Imagine your smartphone that can be used as a full desktop PC. Ubuntu will also run on Android phones and it will become a PC by just connecting a keyboard, mouse and monitor.

They share the same Linux kernel so they can run at the same time, Android for phone experience and Ubuntu for desktop. Is that amazing?

Ubuntu OS Features and System Requirements

A phone that you can see yourself in. Ubuntu is packed with features like personalized home screen, 4 edges navigation, fluid user interface and easy access to apps and settings.

Ubuntu uses the 4 edges of your smartphone screen to navigate. It has also lots of features, it is not limited to HTML5 and mobile SDK but also to native apps utilizing full capabilities of phones hardware.

You can also personalized your home screen that reflects your unique character. It allows you easy access to apps and conversation to all text, calls, email and social media posts and even to your gallery.

Everything you expect in a phone are included like SMS, MMS, web browsing, music, photography, video and email.

Let's take a look what a 4 edges navigation can do.

Left Edge -  swipe it and it will reveal all your favorite apps
Right Edge - swipe and instantly brings you to the last app you are using. A full left-to-right swipe will shows all your open apps. You can also swipe right, then right to take you back to the previous app you used before.
Top/Bottom - A swipe from the top and bottom let you make search, access to settings, connectivity and apps control. You can also hide

System Requirements

Ubuntu OS can run on inexpensive hardware to provide fast, responsive UI and it doesn't have the overhead of Java virtual machine so all core applications run at full native speed.

Here are the system requirements either as entry level or high-end smartphone.

Processor: 1 GHz Cortex-A9/Quad-core A9 or Intel Atom
Memory: 512 MB - 1 GB/ 1GB and above
Flash Storage: 4-8Gb + SD/ 32 GB and Above + SD
Multi-Touch: Yes/ Yes
Desktop Convergence: No/Yes

Take note, to run Ubuntu as desktop you need a higher system requirements. So, how much will the first Ubuntu powered smartphone would cost consumers?

It will be available on entry level and high end smartphone in the last quarter of 2013 so stay tuned for this device.
